Series/Canon: Greek Mythology
From When? Modern Day

History: Ares is one of the children of Zeus and Hera, they of the most loveless marriage in all of history. It's likely that he was either born in Thrace, or he just considers it his homeland. In any case, Ares is the God of War, and that makes him... pretty unpopular, because he's not the honorable, tactical side of war-- no, that's Athena. Ares represents bloodthirstiness and brutality, and his capacity for violence is endless. Even as a kid, he was probably pretty terrible. Probably. But we don't know much about Ares's childhood.

What we do know is that the other Olympians-- barring Aphrodite-- don't seem to like or respect him. This seems to sum it up. It doesn't help that a lot of the stories about him involve him doing something stupid, being humiliated, or just plain losing. There are some stories where he succeeds (like when he managed to capture Sisyphus and rescue Thanatos-- or Hades, depending on the version you hear), but a lot of times, Ares doesn't come out on the winning side.

A few choice tales about Ares:

One time, two giants-- Otus and Ephialtes-- kidnapped him, chained him up, and left him in an urn for 13 months, until he was rescued by Hermes-- or Artemis, depending on which version you hear. Ares didn't even get a chance to bring his wrath down on them, because Artemis ended up killing them instead.

There was also the time Ares's brother Hephaestus learned that Ares was boning his wife, Aphrodite, on the regular. Deciding he wanted to get revenge on the lovers, he crafted a magic net that trapped the two in bed, mid-fuck. And then he called all the gods and goddesses over to witness their humiliation. The goddesses demurred, but you can bet the gods ran over there posthaste to get a good view and make snide remarks. GOOD TIMES.

During the Trojan War (during which Ares changed sides a couple of times, or at least tried to), Ares was grievously wounded-- some say in the groin-- by Diomedes, who used a spear guided by Athena against the god. Ares literally ran from the battlefield to cry to Zeus to heal him. And Zeus did, after rebuking his son for being such a terrible failure. Also during the war, Athena once threw a boulder at him and knocked him down, then slapped the shit out of Aphrodite when she tried to help him.

One time, Ares also murdered one of Poseidon's asshole sons, who had raped his daughter. That's an example of Ares doing something awesome for once. Too bad it ended in him getting arrested and tried for the murder!!! But it's okay, the gods eventually decided that the guy had it coming, and Ares was acquitted.

Here are some choice links about Ares and other myths concerning him: Overview, some excerpts from texts about him, and Wikipedia!

Since war has pretty much always been a fixture in human society, the passing centuries have been productive for Ares. He takes nourishment from conflict, and while there may have been lulls for him in the areas he tended to call home, the advent of a more globalized world has seen his influence spread far and wide beyond the Mediterranean.

Although Ares is taken from the modern era, he's... pretty much still the same guy-- well, god-- although he's adapted to the times. He has to, since war has evolved and morphed into something wholly unrecognizable from his prime. The advent of firearms was something he was totally cool with. Bombs? Okay... But the atom bomb? Weapons of mass destruction? Drones? Come on, what respectable warrior would use those? He longs for the days when war was fought by armies squaring off face-to-face. However, at the very least, conflict is going as strong as ever, and so he gets some worship that way, even if soldiers don't realize they're paying homage to him when they gun down an enemy combatant.

Personality: Of all the children of Hera, Ares is perhaps the one who most takes after his mother, in that he has a tendency to let his temper guide his actions. As the embodiment of war-- not the tactical side, but the primal, brutal side-- he is known for being hot-headed, violent, cruel and bloodthirsty. In addition to warfare, hatred and rage also fall under his purview, so that should be pretty telling in how it affects his personality. He's described as "a god irascible, hard to govern, and one whose mind knew no respect for others." So, basically, he's a temperamental asshole. It's not just that he partakes in violence and cruelty; he seems to actively enjoy it, laughing and relishing in it.

Despite being an ultra manly god (no, seriously, some say he's the god of manliness in addition to everything else), Ares can be, well, a giant baby, frankly. He may be a fierce warrior, but when he's injured? He doesn't take it very well, and may even run from the battlefield to go crying to his dad. Being super quick to anger is also not the most mature trait one can bear. And Ares has also been known to spend a lot of time shouting and screaming when he's been wronged-- although, in his defense, shouting is a pretty reasonable reaction to getting bound in chains and locked in an urn for thirteen months. Speaking of that: humiliation is not an uncommon theme in stories about Ares. For all his might in the battlefield, he's not immune to being taken down a peg from time to time, although any lessons he should be learning hardly stick.

Given his entire... him, Ares is pretty difficult to love. He fights with his siblings-- especially Athena, with whom he has a rivalry-- and his own father tells him how much he hates him. Despite this, Ares has some allies/attendants: Eris, goddess of discord; Enyo, a war goddess, and the goddess of destruction; and his kids, Deimos (Dread) and Phobos (Fear). You can see that there's a running theme in who he keeps his company with. However, it should be noted that Ares has had numerous affairs, both with goddesses and mortals, indicating that there's certainly something appealing about him. Probably, it's his good looks. His most frequent lover is Aphrodite, who bore him something like eight children, who were gods/goddesses that ranged from love and harmony... to fear and terror. Eros, god of love, is one of his most notable offspring.

Despite his cruelty and bloodthirstiness, Ares isn't immune to having ~feeeeelings~ for others. He seems to be genuinely fond of Aphrodite, willing to do what it takes to please her (he decides to back the Trojans at her insistence). Of course, with his positive feelings also come the negative: jealousy. While he seems to be fine with Aphrodite sleeping around in general, he doesn't like it when she becomes too fond of others. As such, he can and will do things like... turn into a boar and gore her lover Adonis to death.

Although Ares's parental involvement with his many offspring is minimal, at best, he does appear to either care about them a little bit, or take any slights against them as a slight against him. Let's say it's a mixture of both. When one of his daughters is raped (or assaulted with the intent to rape; Ares might have stopped it in time) by a son of Poseidon, he avenges her by killing the offending man. When his children are killed in myths, he tends to either go on vengeance rampages, or at least try to. Also, while Ares is known for lacking in morality and values, and for violence and generally being horrible, it should be noted that, unlike some gods (Zeus), Ares doesn't rape people. So, at least he surpasses that super low bar of decency.

Given that war, violence, and the general shitty cruelty of humanity has been continuing more or less unabated since the dawn of time, Ares is pretty engaged with the modern world, adapting with it. While he doesn't approve of certain aspects of modern warfare (namely the lack of a personal touch where things like drones and weapons of mass destruction are concerned, and he thinks biological warfare should be left to the likes of Apollo tyvm), the fact that people are constantly developing new ways to violently end each other's lives is pretty appealing to him, and it keeps him going strong. He's pretty much thriving in the 20th and 21st centuries. Since he has adapted so well to the world as it's changed, he doesn't really speak or behave in an archaic fashion. He tends to dress in a fairly utilitarian way, giving the impression of a soldier even though he doesn't wear a uniform when he's not in the thick of a battle. He misses the thrill of armies charging into face-to-face combat, and he especially misses his battle gear from the Hellenistic period, but... ah well. At least he's had a long time to get used to wearing pants.

Some general characteristics that aren't covered in myths, but can be extrapolated from his overall personality: Ares is full of himself, to the point of prideful arrogance. He's unlikely to back down from a challenge, seeing it as an affront to his manliness-- this, of course, can make him pretty easy for a clever god (or mortal) to manipulate. He respects those who are strong, or who have demonstrated prowess in battle; otherwise, he looks down on and can be totally disrespectful to others. He is likely the type who starts typing in all caps and flame warring when he gets angry on the internet.

Why do you think your character would work in this setting? Ares is choosing to come to New Dodge because he wanted six months of alone time with Aphrodite. So that they can bone without fear of getting TRAPPED IN A NET. Whether or not Aphrodite actually shows up... who knows. He's under the impression that she's coming here regardless.

And although he's a tremendous jackass in myths and legends, there's nothing indicating that Ares wouldn't get to work if he were stuck here, although he'd certainly do so reluctantly and consider most things that don't involve punching or stabbing beneath him. And, without his attendants to sow discord, fear, terror, and other horrible things, he's unlikely to do much damage to the town beyond influencing others towards rage or starting fistfights. So, there probably won't be any wars in New Dodge.

What will your character do for work? ...bowling alley. I'd stick him in construction, but he's likely to break everything. And putting him in the gym as a personal trainer would be a bad idea for whoever he's training.

Or maybe bartender at the saloon, but that's really more Dionysus's thing than his.
